 Biography
“I never had to get into music because I was already into it from birth.” Sanjeev Babu said. “My mother used to sing Bhajans everyday. My father, Krishna Pillai, was a Kathakali singer. I grew up in a musical atmosphere.”
The words touched my heart. I had asked him when he got into music. My mind drew up visions of a child running around and playing in a house filled with music.
His interest in guitar was inspired by watching actors like Prem Naseer perform onscreen. As there was little formal training available for guitar in Kerala, he took it upon himself as a challenge to learn to play the instrument. It was years later that Sri Yesudas started Tharangini School of Music in Trivandrum. They offered formal training in guitar under Mr. John Antony (Elite Aces). Of course, Sanjeev Babu was in the first batch to join the school. He also learned classical music from Sri Trivandrum Sudarshanan.
After his training at Tharangini School of Music, Sanjeev Babu continued to work as a musician in the studio associated with the school. He worked for esteemed music composers like Sri Devarajan Master, Sri Dakshinamoorthi Swamy and Sri M K Arjunan Master. He went on to work as an assistant and Music Conductor to late LPR Varma.
In 1988 he became a music composer in All India Radio. He composed title music for different TV serials in Doordarsan in addition to many other original creations.
Mr. Sanjeev Babu is the Music Director of several movies such as Kakkinakshatram, Rishivamsham, Samantharangal (background score), Videshi Nair Swadeshi Nair, Dupe Dupe Dupe, Shambo Mahadeva and Chakram. He has also created many devotional cassettes and albums for different labels.
Babu loves to work with the renowned actor and film director, Mr. Balachandra Menon. Strangely, he does not create the musical score for his good friend, but writes the scripts for Mr. Menon’s films.
Sanjeev Babu holds the Guinness Book of World Records 2004 for playing the guitar continuously for twenty four hours. He has also been bestowed with honors such as Nana Miniscreen Award 1994, Sauparnikatheeram Award 2001.
He lives in Trivandrum with his wife Prabha, and his two children Shalina and Sarath. Shalina is married to Manjith gopalakrishnan who is software engineer in Alliance cornhill,Technopark,trivandrum
His idol is Mohammed Rafi, his passion the guitar, challenge his teacher, and music his blood. These combined with the serenity in his smile, is an inspiration to all.
