Sunil Thakkar's fascination for music and movies came from his upbringing in Bombay, India. His favourite past time was scouting the posh Juhu area
for film star bunglows. The moment Sunil had waited for finally arrived when he saw Amitabh Bachchan smoking bidis outside his gated mansion. He immediately started "Star Tours" and took newly arrived villagers star gazing for a nominal fee of Rs. 85. Business was booming until a local "bhai" showed up at his house with 6 goons wanting a cut of the profits. Scared of the illegal system, Sunil's mother sent him to US to pursue higher education in Engineering. While in school he changed his focus from Engineering to 'patoing' a young Gujarati girl called Sandhya who he later married. Sunil and Sandhya started Music Masala, a south asian radio show.
The show was packed with wacky humor, bhangra, and all bollywood gossip. Sunil had accumulated from his Star Tour days.
This irreverent little radio show had an attitude and proved to be an instant hit among the younger
South Asian audience.
Music Masala became a community by hosting desi parties in dance clubs with people jamming to bhangra and desi remixes. The only dilemma was - to many FOBs. Fresh of the Boat desis. They came in groups of 12, shared one beer, and stomped the dance floor with their "hoye hoye" bhangra moves. This was a signal for all ladies to flee. No ladies No
Party! It was time to be more selective at the door and prohibit people based on smell and attire. With the absence of the smell detector, a "no sneakers"
policy worked like a charm until desis became smarter and started polishing their sneakers black.
When people called on the radio show asking "where's the party yaar?" Sunil was quick on his feet to reply back with, "Party? What Party?" Even though Sunil may never admit this, it is no secret that all of his life experiences are the basis of the characters in the film "Dude where's the
How ironic that in the film Sunil plays the King of FOBs - "Shyam Sunder Balabhadrapatramukhi" who is In search of a cool desi party. He may call it brilliant acting, but the truth is he was just being himself.
Music Masala's latest adventure is hosting desi parties aboard Masala Cruises. "Indians have taken over the far corners of the earth. now it is
time to claim the seven seas which is rightfully ours" says Sunil. To join the massive parties on the worlds biggest superliners visiting exotic
destinations such as Alaska, Bahamas, Mexico & Europe visit
